Many people say they don't need to go to church, they can worship God anywhere. This is true, and we should worship God everywhere and anytime of day and night. Others say they don't need to go to church to be a Christian, and this is also true. However all the reasons not to go to church comes down to thinking only about oneself.
One of the very basic principles of Christianity is self denial. Now we are not talking about making yourself suffer to prove you love God, or to be more spiritual. Rather we are talking about denying oneself for the good of others. The encouragement to act like, and think like Jesus Christ is found in Philippians chapter 2, and it says the following:
1If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Philippians 2:1-4
Going to church for your benefit is not nearly as important as you going to benefit others. Many people say, “I get nothing out of going to church”. We are to go for what we can put in, then we will get something out. That is why the book of Hebrews commands us to go to church.
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25
We are not to forsake assembling of ourselves together, like some people do. We are to come together to encourage one another. It is not about what we get, it is about what we can give. Just showing up will encourage others, helping out will bless others. If you want to be like Jesus, going to church is the thing to do.
